Oldest Philippine Street

Rey Belen May 3, 2011 Travel No Comments
Last April, I had the opportunity to go to Cebu again and travel to some of its landmarks, for  client Chooks to Go. One intriguing fact that our tour guide told us was that the OLDEST street in the Philippines can be found in Cebu. Hmmm... So, the group decided to shoot the place and it could fit very much with other Cebu's famous landmarks. I was so enthusiastic to see. Just imagine, laying my feet on the OLDEST street. It's historic. It was almost noontime when we got to the place.

All the amazement and enthusiasm, tucked in my chest, just suddenly flushed out of my nostrils after sighing at the site of the historic place.

All the while, I was thinking that the oldest street in the country will have a more "SCENIC" and "TOURISM-friendly look" than the way it is presented now.

I guess I got over excited and my imagination went too way ahead of me.

I was thinking that it could have been something of like the Hollywood's "Walk of Fame" or with a more prominent landmark, statue or whatever that would make the place really DISTINCT and STAND OUT.

The Colon Street, that is by the way the OLDEST street in the country, was more of like just a regular street. :-(

I mean, the Colon Street could have been more than just one of the busiest street in Cebu. It could have been more than crossroad with big advertisements for commercial stuff, and yet almost unnoticeable prompter that the street is the oldest in the country.

Well, it's never too late. What I'm saying is that Colon Street can somehow be improved. The place is historic. It could be one of the most visited places in Cebu (even the Philippines) if it could be repackaged in a more TOURIST-attracting view.

I suggest that Colon Street can be improved:

  • More attractive pavements or walkways
  • A higher staying area or even footbridge (so not to mess up with traffic) giving tourists a better view of the street
  • Bigger and more creative statue/plaque representing the place

I'm not an engineer or architect of some sort. But by being a tourist, I expected MORE from a historic place like that.

Just my thoughts though. :-D

In general, my Cebu trip was great. Thanks to Chooks! :-D
